I4SAFE Migration Youth Camp

Migration remains a defining issue in Nigeria and across Africa, with over 1.5 million Nigerians living abroad. While migration can provide opportunities, it often comes with significant risks, particularly when undertaken irregularly. Nigeria is one of the top African countries with high incidences of irregular migration, especially to Europe. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) highlight that a large percentage of irregular migrants and human trafficking victims from sub-Saharan Africa are Nigerians, many of whom are young people lured by false promises of better lives abroad, only to face exploitation and abuse. Recognizing the urgency of engaging young people in addressing these migration-related challenges, Initiatives for Safe Migration and Social Justice proposes a comprehensive youth program that focuses on educating and empowering young people with safe migration practices, particularly on the dangers of human trafficking and irregular migration.

The I4Safe Migration Youth Camp is a proactive initiative designed to tackle these critical issues by equipping young Nigerians with knowledge on safe and legal migration pathways. With Nigeria’s youth making up over 60% of the population, the camp seeks to address the root causes driving irregular migration, such as unemployment and poverty. It also aims to raise awareness of human trafficking, exposing the tactics of traffickers and the dangers of exploitation. By fostering leadership skills, participants will be empowered to advocate for safe migration in their communities and serve as change agents. The camp will further promote intercultural dialogue and understanding, encouraging cooperation among participants from diverse backgrounds to collectively tackle migration challenges and promote safer alternatives. Through this initiative, the camp aspires to create informed youth advocates who can play a vital role in combating irregular migration and human trafficking in Nigeria and beyond.
